RELAXED HAIR CARE TIPS

Keeping relaxed hair healthy and strong requires taking great care of it.  We have researched and collected some great tips to help you on your healthy relaxed hair journey.

Choose a relaxer that’s right for your hair texture.

Do not overlap your relaxer.  Use Length Savers™ to protect your previously relaxed hair at every touch-up.

Follow the relaxer instructions and the time limits in the instructions to prevent overprocessing and damage.

Stretch your relaxers. Allow enough new growth to form a good line of demarcation between the new growth and relaxed hair – at least one inch.

Be gentile to your hair!  Use products made to promote healthy relaxed hair and try to avoid using hair utensils that may damage your hair.

Condition and deep condition your hair.  Never miss conditioning your hair after washing it.  Create a deep conditioning routine.

Find products that work best with your hair.  This may take some experimentation, but it’s worth the effort.

Minimize regularly manipulating your hair.  Frequent manipulation can lead to hair damage.

Never use permanent hair dye over a relaxer without going to a licensed cosmetologist.  Permanent hair dye on relaxed hair strands can eventually cause extreme damage.

Wrap your hair with a silk or satin scarf or cap every night or sleep on a satin pillowcase.  Exposing the hair to more coarse fabrics can lead to dryness and breakage.

Do not skip trims!  Hair will grow back, so let the bad ends go.  Trimming the hair helps to keep the hair healthy and free of split ends that eventually split up the hair shaft and cause breakage.

Diet is key.  Drink plenty of water and follow a healthy diet with iron rich foods.  You may also try taking hair vitamins with biotin and collagen.

Avoid combing through hair with a fine tooth comb when it is extremely dry or when it is extremely wet.  Brushing or combing hair when wet can cause single strand knots.  Look for brushes and combs designed especially for detangling wet hair.  Combing relaxed hair when dry can cause split ends and breakage.

Minimize heat and using heat tools.  Excessive heat can dry out and cause irreparable damage to relaxed hair.  Always use heat protectants.

Set up a daily routine with products that work for your hair.

Keep your hair moisturized.

Use microfiber towels or t-shirts to dry your hair after shampooing and conditioning.

Wear protective and low manipulation styles.
